Look-a-Likes for Less: Ribbon Necklaces

I have to go pick up my mom's dog from the groomer and pick up my daughter from my mom's house so just a quick post today. I love this ribbon necklace trend so I scoured the web looking for similar necklaces in a range of different prices. I think layering pearl and crystal ribbon necklaces looks great. To get more for your money try layering several of the inexpensive necklaces together or one inexpensive ribbon necklace with a more expensive "statement" necklace. Of course the bib necklaces stand out all by themselves. Happy Saturday!

Trend: Wrapping

It took a little while, but the "wrapping" trend has made its way from the pages of fashion magazines into decor magazines. In the October 2009 issue of Elle Decor there is an "trend alert" on wrapping, but this trend had already popped up in the June 2009 issue of House Beautiful with the crisscrossed Bondage Chair by Dransfield & Ross (see earlier post). Even earlier than that the "wrapping" or "bondage" trend was appearing in fashion magazines such as the March 2009 issue of Elle that showed the "Bondage" dress trend, and earlier than that "bondage" style dresses appeared in the January 2009 issue of Vogue and February 2009 issue of Cosmopolitan (see my earlier post).

From My Stack of Magazines: October

As usual, here are my favorites from my stack of this month's magazines.

The photos that I scanned don't do these photos justice. The moody color palette and luxurious silk lit à la polonaise make this bedroom (which was originally the living room) dramatic and opulent. I also think the bird hanging from the lit à la polonaise adds a touch of whimsy to the space.

I love settees and in this month's Elle Decor they have a guide to The 10 Most Sensational Settees.

Better Homes and Gardens had some great fall decor ideas this month, I especially like the pumpkins used as place cards and the hodge podge of mismatched chairs surrounding the table, and there is just something about that kitchen island with the rounded ends that makes it stand out amongst all the white cabinetry.

These raffia laundry bags from Linens Limited look so clean and classic, but at $100 each eek! I would assume it would probably be easy and much cheaper to just use a stencil to paint the labels on inexpensive laundry bags.

Orange is one of my least favorite colors, but with the sophisticated hues in this month's House Beautiful I may need to reconsider.

Real Simple has instructions for arranging faux flowers, branches, and succulents. While I'm not usually a fan of fake flowers some of the arrangements in this month's Real Simple look like the real deal.

The "Bishop's House" shown below was inspired by the homeowners' friend and former next-door neighbor who was a retired Episcopal bishop. However, the inspiration for the exterior of the home came from a colorful crayon drawing made by the daughter of the homeowner. In honor of their friend the bishop, the family incorporated the Gothic architecture common in Episcopal churches into their home with stained glass windows, seating in the breakfast room made to look like church pews, leaded glass, a groin vaulted foyer, and a pool house made to mimic the entry arbor of Christ Church on St. Simons Island. A more whimsical and comical touch is the secondary staircase which has finials carved to look like chess pieces (another nod to the bishop). This home is highly personalized yet these personalized details only add to the old-world style of the home rather than detracting from it's charm.

The photos below are of Cow Rock Cottage, the Southern Living 2009 Home Awards Best New Cottage. I can see why with views like that. Rustic elements such as the front steps made from local granite and the poplar bark shakes make the cottage fit in perfectly with the surrounding landscape.

In the October issue of Southern Living there are step-by-step instructions for creating "A Family Command Center". I may end up using the instructions to create a smaller version of the one shown below for my laundry room. You should be able to find all the necessary supplies for this project at your local office supply store or online stores like containerstore.com.

I've seen wine corks used for making bulletin boards, wreaths, vase filler, trivets, as well as many other things, but I would never have thought to use them as knobs for kitchen cabinets. The corks were attached to the cabinets using brass wood screws. Simple and original. Love it.

This framed envelope is so charming and is probably a great conversation starter in a dining room. The homeowner had an envelope addressed by his great-grandmother scanned enlarged and scanned by a local printer.

Etsy Rave

I'm a big fan of etsy as you may have noticed from some of my previous posts, so I wanted to post about one of my new favorite etsy sellers. I bought these two feather wreaths from etsy seller Victorian Petals. She has feather wreaths in a variety of colors. I got a black wreath for Halloween and a white wreath for Christmas/winter. They're so wonderfully fluffy. Since the white one is simple and doesn't scream "CHRISTMAS!" I'm probably going to leave it up all winter.

More DIY Mail Inspired Art

Just a quick little post today. I saw this in the October 2009 issue of Southern Living and thought this would be a great little DIY project. The homeowner had an envelope addressed by his great-grandmother scanned enlarged and scanned by a local printer. I think it's a great way to incorporate a piece of family history into a home.

Christmas Table: Rosanna Dinnerware

RosannaInc.com is one of my new favorite websites. There are so many great dinnerware collections, but for today I selected my favorites from the holiday collections; Tis the Season, Heavenly, and Four Calling Birds. All three styles are white porcelain with 24 karat gold detail. I think I like these sets because I'm not a big fan of a lot of the overly cartoonish red and green dinnerware usually in stores this time of year. For someone that already has a basic everyday set of white dinnerware, salad plates and mugs or a serving platter could be incorporated to dress up their existing set rather than buy a complete set of holiday dinnerware. Since Tis the Season, Heavenly, and Four Calling Birds are all white porcelain with gold details they would probably look wonderful mixed and matched together. If I had my choice, I'd mix Tis the Season and Heavenly.
